This must be where I talk about myself. Alright, here we go...
If you know me, you know im not a complainer. I speak mostly in a positive manner and I have a general optimistic look at life. Everybody learns by what they experience. For me most of my childhood was inside on the hot days in the summer and the cold days in the winter. I was sticks, bones and fluid as a child. Pools were out, snow was out. Similar to most children that grew up with sickle cell.
Hydroxyurea is a beautiful drug. It gave me the ooporunity to eperience life, to reach my potential. I dont know where I would be without it. I traveled, obtained an undergraduate degree, jumped in the ocean and sat in the sun. My life was mine in whichever direction I wanted to take it. This is why i support SCTPN, why I walk and extend an invitation for my family and friends to walk. We have to give people living with Sickle Cell a chance at a normal life.
This year I finally saw an idea that would transform the face of this ugly disease. Genetic Therapy for Sickle Cell has gone into human clinical trial. The first patient was succesfully "cured." I had the pleasure to speak with the doctor heading the trial. My biggest take away is they need more funding.
Currently I am working full time in a career that I love. I continue to travel and see the world. This disease is progressing as I'm getting older and my body is getting used to the medicine. I'm working with my doctors to stay ontop of my health. I've changed my diet to keep not only this disease at bay, but also to have whole body health. I continue to remain positive in search for relief for myself and the rest of the warriors out there.
I am completely open to discussion, whether it's another super hero with the power to change healthy red blood cells into sickled ones, or people who lack that power.
